Butcher & Oemler Cluster A2111: a Head-on Merger at Z = 0.23
نویسنده
چکیده
We present ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of A2111, the richest galaxy cluster photometrically surveyed by Butcher & Oemler (1984). The cluster contains a distinct comet-shaped X-ray subcomponent, which appears hotter than the rest of the cluster. The galaxy and X-ray surface brightness distributions of the cluster show a similarly elongated morphology. These results suggest that the cluster is undergoing a head-on subcluster merger. This merger may also be responsible for the high fraction of gas-rich blue galaxies observed in the cluster. We have further detected a poor cluster along the merging axis and at a projected distance of ∼ 5 Mpc from A2111. Star Formation in Cluster-Cluster Mergers
Radio continuum emission at 1.4 GHz was used to identify active galaxies in a sample of 20 nearby Abell clusters. The radio emission indicates either an active galactic nucleus or current star formation, and optical spectroscopy was used to evaluate which of these dominates for each of the radio-selected galaxies. In an analysis which parallels the blue fractions of Butcher-Oemler studies, we c...
متن کاملButcher-Oemler Cluster with a Non-isothermal Atmosphere and Normal Metallicity
We report results from an X-ray study of the Abell 2111 galaxy cluster using the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology (ASCA) and the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC). By correcting for the energy-dependent point-spread function of the ASCA instruments, we have examined the temperature structure of the cluster. The cluster’s core within 3’ is found to have a temp...
متن کاملThe K–selected Butcher-Oemler Effect
We investigate the Butcher-Oemler effect using samples of galaxies brighter than observed frame K * + 1.5 in 33 clusters at 0.1 z 0.9. We attempt to duplicate as closely as possible the methodology of Butcher & Oemler. Apart from selecting in the K-band, the most important difference is that we use a brightness limit fixed at 1.5 magnitudes below an observed frame K – 2 – the nominal limit of r...
متن کاملReconstructing the History of Star Formation in Rich Cluster Cores
Our study begins by revisiting the photometric Butcher-Oemler effect using data from 7 CNOC clusters at 0.23< ∼ z<0.43. We construct the foreground/background corrected colour-magnitude diagrams for these clusters. Our analysis shows that the CNOC clusters reproduce the trend of increasing blue galaxy fraction with redshift as seen by Butcher & Oemler. We use these data to investigate the histo...
متن کاملColor , spectral and morphological transformations of galaxies in clusters
In this review I focus on the galactic properties in clusters at z > 0.1−02. The most salient results regarding the evolution in galaxy colors, spectral features and morphologies are discussed. The Butcher-Oemler effect is the excess of galaxies bluer than the color-magnitude sequence (where most ellipticals/passive galaxies lie) in clusters at z > 0.1 − 0.2 as compared to the richest nearby cl...
